Happy Thanksgiving and thank you ...Hi Castlequeen,

Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for following my blog. In the compass rose symbol for rhythm, I went counterclockwise simply because the acronyms for the directions E, N, W, and S fit with the sequence of the main lesson (E=enter, N=new, W=work, and S=storytime). As far as preferences in Waldorf education, I have seen both directions in practice. Teachers have done circle time in both directions when they are doing movements such as counting intervals. In fact, often, one direction balances the other and teachers will consciously do both for the children. In the Advent Spiral, Steiner has used the double spiral as the symbol where there is both inward spiral and outward spiral movement, so both clockwise and counterclockwise movements are again represented equally.

Anatomically-speaking, becuase of our bilaterality, the circulation of blood in humans is also both as it travels through our limbs, organs, and tissues. In the heart, it moves from right atrium to right ventricle to lungs for oxygen then to the left atrium and left ventricle to be recirculated, here the flow appears to me more as a lemniscate. (I have a medical doctorate, and happen to be teaching the cardiovascular system to grade seven this coming week.)

There are many source books and secondary books out there, so as Steiner suggests, we make our own journeys, and ultimately, through the discoveries, we do what we intuitively know and are comfortable with.

Thank you for sharing!

Blessings, RickRick Tan IIIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04863194300162692991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744414949771413814.post-60658794055164062432009-11-28T00:05:50.313-08:002009-11-28T00:05:50.313-08:00Hi Rick,

Above I wonder why you chose the circle to go counterclockwise as opposed to clockwise (the direction I thought Waldorf circles (i.e. circletime movement) went which moves in the same direction as blood circulates around the body).
I wonder which way Waldorf spirals (eg Advent) flow??? What have you learnt in your travels? Thanks again.
Ali, NZCastlequeenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00945275419281121219noreply@blogger.com
